J.J. Abrams Leaving Star Wars Already?

The rumormill is spreading something not too surprising: J.J. Abrams will possibly leave Star Wars Episode VII. According to IGN.com Lucasfilms has of course completely denied this claim by saying, “JJ is having a great time working on the script and is looking forward to going into production next year.” Somehow I doubt that. Abrams was out voted on filming in England and we all know being close to his family is important to him.

In fact, you know what will be filmed near his family? Star Trek 3. And ST3 is still in need of a director. In my perfect world, Abrams would get to direct both films. You can tell he’s a fan of the Trek universe and I think it’s fair to assume he’s also a SW fan. Personally, I can’t decide which project I would rather Abrams take on. I love what he’s done for the Trek movies but I think if Star Wars wants to be successful with Episode VII that they will need Abrams at the helm. Face it, Star Wars is a pretty delicate fanverse (Jar Jar Binks anyone?) and should be handled with care. They not only have to please fans of the original trilogy and new trilogy but also fans that have eaten up everything Star Wars they can get their hands on: The Clone Wars, the books/encyclopedias, the religion, and plenty more.

So what do you think? If Abrams does end up leaving, who would you want to direct Star Wars: Episode VII?

  1. If he was to drop out… It’ll sound cliche.. But I’d like a Peter Jackson, or Guillermo del Toro (his Pans Labyrinth days.. Not hellboy days).

Who else can pull off gigantic far reaching series? I don’t know. M Night Shyamalan? <kidding
